A Short Introduction To Skye Vacations

The island of Skye is the most suitable vacation destination for walkers and water sports enthusiasts. Situated amongst a collection of islands known as the Inner Hebrides a vacation on Skye is an incredible and unique experience. A large number of folk visit the Scottish Highlands to experience the spectacular countryside and many tourists agree that the Inner Hebrides feature the finest and most majestic. In the following article I examine at some of the reasonswhy the Isle of Skye is such a great place to take a short break.

Places To Visit On Skye

Although it is not actually located on the island no visit would be utterly complete without having a day trip to Eilean Donan Castle. One of Scotland’s most photographed monuments the castle has also appeared in numerous movies including the 1985 cult classic “Highlander”. The castle is privately owned but, for a fee , you are allowed to wander about the well equipped castle or attend a guided tour. The castle is only 15 minutes from the Skye Bridge.

The only true mountain range in the British Isles is The Cuillin which provide challenging opportunities for mountain climbing . In total the rough Black Cuillins features twelve munros with Sgurr Alasdair being the highest at 992 m (3,255 ft).

The Isle of Skye only has two Corbetts  (Glamaig is the highest) and both are situated in the Red Hills. The Black Cuillin are bare rock at their summits whereas the Red Hills (often incorrectly called the Red Cuillin)  are much gentler having flora to the very summit .

If you want to indulge in climbing please seek some advice as it can often be immensely dangerous, especially if you are ill equipped. Too many people find themselves in difficult circumstances following a swift shift in the weather, always plan for the worst. You can access the Black Cuillin from Glen Brittle and the Red Hills from Glen Sligachan.

Skye attractions are the Talisker distillery, the Glendale Toy Museum, Colbost Croft Museum, Bright Water Visitor Centre, Giant Macaskill Museum, Skye Museum of Island Life, Armadale Castle Gardens and Museum of the Isles and Dunvegan Castle. The stronghold of the Macleods of Dunvegan and Harris, Dunvegan Castle, is dramatically set upon a cliff-top. The Isle of Skye has a mild climate and is much more green than most islands in Scotland and this is made abundantly clear in the fantastic gardens of the castle , you will also find a restaurant and craft shop which help make it ideal for a day out.

Overlooking the Isle of Raasay, Broadford is a seaside village which features several much needed facilities but is also rather nice location to spend a couple of hours. Broadford has some amazing sea views however the number one port of call should be the small, but incredibly interesting, Skye Serpentarium Reptile World where it is possible to indulge in some hands on experience!

Skye hotels appear here there and everywhere and it is rather easy to find one but finding a free room is  a different story altogether. It is well worth the effort to make your bookings as early as possible when you do please take a look at our listings of Isle of Skye hotel accommodation .
